Welcome to my world

I decided it was time to focus on me for a bit and do some of the things that I have always wanted to do. This site is one of those things, and the plan is to document this and other projects here as I go along.

How it all started for me

The reference to the song in the title is intentional, one of my first jobs out of university was working for an LEA (Local Education Authority) in Derbyshire called DESCIT. This was at the tail end of the UK investing the use of the Acorn BBC micro in schools in the UK. DESCIT were responsible for creating a package called MyWorld that enabled primary school teachers create their own interactive visual assets for use in the classroom.

Now, I can't take all the credit for this, because the first two versions were created by my predecessor. I was responsible for creating MyWorld3 which added multimedia capabilities to the already popular application.

Sadly, MyWorld3 was never properly released for the Acorn Arcemedes, because IT provision in the UK shifted away from Acorn to PC. As a result, I left DESCIT to move onto pastures new. But it does look like MyWorld3 got released for PC. I can't be sure if any of my code made it into the final release, but I like to think that it did.

MyWorld3 logoDress Teddy game

Dress teddy, shown above was the way that thousands of primary school children in the UK were introduced to the concept of using a mouse and drag and drop. It was a simple game where you had to dress the teddy bear, and you could print the result out. I do wonder how many pictures there are out there with teddy with underpants on his head :o).

The reference to the Jim Reeves song is because the first sound that played when you launched the development version of MyWorld3 was his classic line "Welcome to my world, won't you come on in...".

Enough nostalgia... lets get to it

That's quite enough sentimental nonsense.. Needless to say, that first step on my professional coding career gave me a good grounding in software development, and I have been coding ever since.

I plan to use this site as a playground to learn new stuff. I'll document my journey along the way. My initial thoughts are to document the following:
